Holiday Study -- Thanksgiving, Part 4: America's Challenge

Continuing with "Thanksgiving Leftovers:"

Last week:

We saw that the the United States was founded as a Christian nation, not just as a religious nation; a Christian nation based on Jesus and the New Testament.

This week:

I want to study how we got into this mess, and raise the question: "Where is the outrage?" How can we be so complacent? We are like the frog in the boiling water, but we don’t seem to know that we are in boiling water. Remember Fabian Fascism from last week?

Thought question: Do we really have a constitutional republic?   (That is the official answer.) ...or do we have a fascist state, posing as one? If so, what are the implications to us as Christians?

What should we do about it? Where do we stand regarding political activism? It is fashionable today to argue that we were never really a Christian Nation.

Nonsense! Last week we shot that "Politically Correct" statement in the heart.  The US was founded as a Christian nation. If Columbus was right, and if the Pilgrims were right, and if our founding fathers were right, that God has something special in mind for our nation, guess what Satan wants to do: thwart it, like he tried to thwart God’s plan with Adam, Abraham, even the birth of Jesus, and his life and death.

I would argue that many forces, social and political, backed knowingly or unknowingly by Satan, are at work to thwart God’s plan, even with regard to this nation.

After the Revolutionary War, there was a period of prosperity. And people started to forget their spirituality. Their faith started to lose its vitality.  Here was a country without an enemy and with apparently unlimited natural resources. The explosive prosperity led to the church's losing its moral leadership, and the church leaders started to make conditions for conversion so burdensome that even many churchgoers said to heck with it.

About that same time, France had its own revolution. And they established a republic also, but one they thought was even better -- one based on the brotherhood of man without the fatherhood of God. They elevated man’s ego to a point that God was not needed. Quickly their ideas spread to the new continent led by Thomas Payne and others. And because there was no strong vital missionary zeal at the time for Christianity, this rejection of spiritualism spread widely.

But as only God could do, he caused a few strong spiritual leaders to come forth to refute the new humanism. This period became known as the Second Great Awakening.

When our country was founded, what they needed was enough committed Christians to get the job done to make Democracy work.

The framers of the Constitution knew this. They understood man’s fallen nature. That is why they constructed our unique system of checks and balances.

How many of you have gone to dinner with a group of four, and to make things simple you agree to just split the check by four And each pay one fourth of it to save separate checks and all the hassle of figuring out each person’s individual bill?

And then what did you order? Prime rib, right? We have all done that to one extent or another.

The amount of damage you can do in one meal is not that great. Suppose that 100 of you decided to share one credit card, and that each year each of you would pay one percent of the total bill. How many of you would head for the electronics store or the appliance store?

When you disconnect the accountability from the responsibility, do you see the analogy? In a pure democracy without moral constraints, there are no good citizens. By design, a citizen will be out to get all he or she can from the system. If selfish men are not led to be unselfish, if people are left to their self-interest without Judeo-Christian moral values, anarchy prevails, economically and politically. Only if a person practices “Love your neighbor as yourself” can democracy work. When that is lost, this American experiment fails.

And it is the designed system of checks and balances which are no longer effective today. They are being run roughshod, both by the Judiciary and the Executive Branch, creating laws not by Congress, But by fiat.

Proverbs 29:18 - "Where there is no vision, the people perish" [KJV]

What we have to pray for is that God will raise enough people with vision to see what is happening to us and to have the guts to challenge the tide of what is happening to us.

One of the founding principles of this country was Religious Freedom (not freedom from religion). In 1993, Congress passed an act named The Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). On June 5, 1997 the Supreme Court struck it down. It had passed the House by unanimous voice vote, and it passed the Senate 97 to 3. Out of 535 elected legislators, only 3 opposed it. And records show that those were based on technicalities, not content.

Can you imagine how rare it would be to get this kind of agreement, Republican and Democrat, Liberal and Conservative, and even with the President, especially on something with religious overtones, and then to get struck down by The Supreme Court, overruling the will of the people as voiced by virtually all of the elected officials?

What makes this so significant is that there has been a steady erosion of religious rights imposed by the courts in recent years, starting with Engel v. Vitale (1962) and Abinton v. Schempp (1963) which banned teacher-led prayer and Bible teaching in schools. The Supreme Court has been increasingly hostile to faith and to traditional moral values.

Some moral leaders have said that America is being ruled by a runaway judiciary. Dave Barton has written a little book entitled "Impeachment, (Reining in an over-reaching Judiciary)". It shows that not only can this runaway be stopped. The mechanics exist to do it, and it has been done a dozen times. The American people can impeach a Supreme Court Judge. It takes the people to stop this trend. Congress will not have the guts to do it unless the people speak up.

What happened, America? Despite our strong spiritual heritage, built on the bedrock of Biblical Christianity, our prosperity and feeling of self-sufficiency has led us to create, for our own pleasure, an immoral society. We have turned our backs on God. So now we find ourselves — big surprise — in a decadent, pornographic, licentious, violent, godless society, not only from roving random violence, but from the government itself — and with the threat of even greater restrictions on our freedom to practice Christianity. Restrictions by the very government that was founded on Christianity.

The Ostracization of Truth In a cultural war, truth is the first casualty. Experience shows that if one persuades impressionable youths that facts do not exist, that history is always arbitrary, then solid ground can be replaced by anyone’s brand of quicksand.

The thieves of history: “National Standards for U.S. History”, not unlike an amnesia-inducing drug, administered on a national scale, without hypodermic needles, are re-writing history. By design, our students have been stripped of the nation’s true history, from their Christian heritage. It has been defined as politically incorrect to teach the true heritage of this country.

We have now had two generations of students who have been subjected to the godless philosophy of our schools. Students from this background have become the parents, the teachers the political leaders, the media people: playwrights, actors, businessmen clergy! They are ignorant of the great moral and religious strengths of our country. Therefore, they are not able to pass these values on to the new generation. There is little hope of recovery.

(One of the only rays of hope is the Internet. It is a blessed anarchy where all voices exist including the ones who remember the founding principles of this nation.)

This idea of stripping young people of true history is not new. It was developed in the councils of the Bolshevik and Nazi parties, and successfully deployed on the youth of the Third Reich and of the Soviet Empire.

To all those who would take over the world, Anglo-American principles, attitudes and traditions have been the object of hate — the arch enemy.

In Soviet occupation which followed Nazi occupation, the same henchmen jailed the same people for the same crime of listening to an English-language broadcast, whether it was 1944 or 1952. The loss of two world wars and the cold war made it clear that neither German technological genius nor Soviet numerical advantage was sufficient to carry the day against American resolve.

The solution: deprive American consciousness of its solid foundations and remove forever the intractable impediments standing in the way of those who want the American experiment. By divorcing the Western civilization and American pragmatism from its roots — from the personalities and events which brought it forth — there will be no more need for battlefield victories.

Ours is a unique heritage. Some receive it through birth. Others survive hardship to claim it, but all of us are stewards of great ideas and traditions. Knowledge of them — and respect for them — have served us like protective armor, yet we are now allowing the creation of generations who will be naked and defenseless. Products of our educational system today don’t know what we studied last week.   Or the weeks before, for that matter.

We are in a war — one that began long ago and has now honed in on its ultimate objective: America’s soul. We are the frog in the boiling water.

Wake up! The water is already boiling!!!

The Myth of Separation of Church and State

Let’s scan through some notable Supreme Court Decisions:

The Results

After the Supreme Court abolished prayer and Bible teaching in public schools (1962),

The high principles that made America great were lost, not just among the lower classes, but in the highest offices in the land. There’s no longer any connection between character and destiny. Moral teaching, proper standards and respect for rules have been removed from our schools. Meaningless courses in “values clarification ” and the tenets of Secular Humanism (classified as a religion by the Supreme Court in 1961) have been substituted. People claim that “morals have changed.” God makes morals and He didn’t change His mind. God hates wickedness.

Our Responsibility: Dual Citizenship

Philippians 3:20 - "For our citizenship is in heaven from whence we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jeremiah 29:7 - "And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall ye have peace."

There are many who have abandoned their duties and obligations as citizens, pointing to their spiritual citizenship as their excuse.

Let’s re-examine this.

I believe that you and I are beneficiaries of a legacy, and that we will be held accountable for our stewardship of this very unique mandate.

In 1877, President James Garfield, the 20th President of the United States, gave the following warning to the American people:

“Now more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless, and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness, and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave, and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature.”

He continued:

“If the centennial does not find us a great nation ... it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces.”

President Garfield understood his dual citizenship. As a citizen of America, he served as a teacher, a college president, a major general in the Union Army, a congressman for 18 year, and finally as President.

His spiritual citizenship as a Christian prompted lifelong daily Bible reading, preaching and active opposition to slavery.

I can’t say it is related, but in fairness I must remind you that he was assassinated in office.

If the media wins this one for the liberals, et al., and the Americans are just too lazy, complacent or corrupt to see them for what they are, you may be certain that — under the guise of eliminating hatred, “protecting the children,” etc., the strengthening arm of the government will put an end to what the Insiders are calling “an atmosphere of divisiveness.”

First Amendment freedoms of the press — and of worship — will only be protected for those institutions and individuals who are “politically correct.”

Are you holding your elected representatives — those that you hired to maintain our Constitutional boundaries — accountable?

Samuel Adams said:

“If you prefer wealth to liberty, and the tranquility of servitude rather than the animated contest of freedom, then go home in peace. We seek neither your counsel nor your arms. But bow down and lick the hands that feed you. And may your chains rest lightly upon you. And may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”

So you ask, "What should we do?"

After gleaning all the background you can, make sure your elected representatives know how you feel about getting the truth known. While no one desires the inevitable disruptions, the future of the Republic clearly depends upon cleaning up the trends of our Nation ’s Capitol.

“Without God, we can’t. Without us, He won’t.”
The duty is ours; the results are God’s.
You have a resource that is even more powerful, more responsive than the ballot box: it is the prayer closet. You have a 24-hour hot line to the Throne Room of the Universe.

Are you serious about the legacy you are leaving for you children and grandchildren?
How serious?
Think about these mechanics -- Five steps on how to persecute a group:

  1. Identify the group, single them out, name them.
  2. You isolate them
  3. You vilify them
  4. You pass laws to restrict their practices
  5. You enforce the laws

That is how the Nazis did it. Does it sound like what is happening to Christians in this country? The cynics insist that it is already too late.

The good news is that our God is in the miracle business. Remember Nineveh? ...and Jonah?

The following verse deals with God and Israel, but God is immutable. His standards do not change.

I think this can apply to us:
2 Chronicles 7:14 - "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

I am convinced that God established this country. So I am willing to claim this promise. But we have to meet the requirements:

Then he will heal our land.

We are dealing with spiritual war and spiritual wickedness in high places, dressed in gray suits.

Edmund Burke said it another way:

“All that is necessary for the forces of evil to win in this world is for enough good men to do nothing.”

“No one has the right to bemoan the loss of that which he did not fight to protect.”

Christians have an obligation to fight, and to pray.
