Genesis 34-35: Jacob Moves to Bethel

Genesis 34: Jacob's daughter Dinah is seduced by Shechem (same as town name), son of Hamor, because Jacob went to Shechem first instead of to Bethel where God told him to go. The men of Shechem agreed to be circumcised as a peace pact, whereupon Simeon and Levi (two of Jacob's sons) went in and slaughtered all the men when they couldn't fight back. They said, "Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?"

Genesis 35: Jacob moves to Bethel (where he should have gone in the first place). God re-affirms Jacob at Bethel, the site of "Jacob's ladder", and re-affirmed his name, "Israel", stating again that Jacob will own the land.

Reuben slept with Bilhah, his father's concubine (mother of Dan and Naphtali). As a consequence, Jacob passed over him with the birthright (on his deathbed, later, in Genesis 48). He also passed over Simeon and Levi, for slaughtering the men of Shechem.
